Strategies for planning a successful event
The following training and referral services are available to for support:
- Ontario Federation of Agriculture
A 1-day training is being planned for Member Service Representatives in October 2018. The training is expected to provide an overview of situations that may arise, the spectrum of mental health issues, ways to listen and respond to people who are struggling, and ideas on agencies/individuals to refer members to if needs arise. The training will be in person and online by someone with a background in mental health and agriculture. Janine Lunn, OFA Capacity Development Coordinator, and Peter Sykanda, OFA Researcher and lead on the mental health file at OFA are organizing the training. - Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario
CFFO has an Advice Centre on their website, a confidential telephone emotional support line and referral service to farmers and farm families. Farmers in crisis can call 1-888-451-2903 Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. - Do More Agriculture Foundation
Do More Ag is a not-for-profit organization focusing on mental health in agriculture across Canada https://www.domore.ag/about-us/ . They operate under three pillars: awareness (i.e. education and breaking the stigma), community (i.e. a place where people can connect and find resources), and research (i.e. supporting, sharing and funding present and future research projects). - Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
Each regional office maintains a list of local/regional stress management resources. - Dr. Andria Jones-Bitton:
Dr. Jones-Bitton made a very engaging presentation to the OSCIA delegates at the 2019 OSCIA Annual Conference, held on February 5-6, 2019 at the Four Points by Sheraton, Kingston, ON.
Four handouts that were provided at the conference are available here:
